Montée du Nid d’Aigle
This is one of the less well-known trail races of the Mont Blanc region and, as the name suggests, is almost all uphill. The race begins in the town of Le Fayet, a stone’s throw from Chamonix, and starts gently along the Montjoie Valley before rising up steeply through forest and the hamlets La Vilette, Champel and Planet. Breaking through treeline, runners cross pastures and meadows to reach the Bionnassay glacier and climb beside it to gain the final 400m of elevation. The sight of the Nid d’Aigle, or Eagle’s Nest, which is the terminus of the Mont Blanc tramway, spurs runners on to the finish line. The descent is much easier – a ride on the tramway back down to Le Fayet is included in the entry price.
