Interview with Vincent Theytaz, Director of Sierre-Zinal

Jul 12, 2016

The 2016 Alps trail running season is well underway! One of the race highlights each year is the legendary Sierre-Zinal, which will take place this year on Sunday, August 14.

Run the Alps had the chance to catch up with Vincent Theytaz, in his second year as Race Director. With his inaugural year behind him, we wanted to know more about his perspective on Sierre-Zinal, and what changes we could expect this year during “le course de cinq 4000” (the race of five 4,000-meters peaks).

Please note: You’ll find Vincent’s responses below in his native French, following our translation of his responses into English.

Run the Alps:
What’s new for Sierre-Zinal 2016?

Vincent: Starting blocks — For several months, the work continued for considering the system of how to start the race, with the purpose of allowing a fluid flow of trail runners during the race. The creation of four blocks with a single start was the main change for the 2015 edition. This system allowed for a smooth start for participants. However, the issue of congestion along the course did not change. The result of several analyses (including a university study) conducted since the last edition, led us to a decision this year to incorporate staggered departures between each block of the Tourist category.

There will be 4 blocks for the Tourist division, with a first start at 5:00 a.m., a second at 5:05 a.m., 5:10 a.m. and then 5:15 a.m. The departure of the elite category runners has been pushed back 15 minutes, and will take place at 9:45 a.m. This system has the advantage of increasing capacity. As a result, Sierre-Zinal is pleased this year to be able to accept a total of 4,200 elite runners and Tourists, or 200 more participants than in 2015.

Obstacle Race in Sierre, for children 4 to 8 years old — In the continuation of activities offered each year on Saturday in the town of Sierre, a small race will be open to children from 4 to 8 years old, during the day when the race bibs are handed out to participants – Saturday, August 13, 2016. Around the walls of the Hôtel de Ville and the central place, it will be equipped with 5 obstacles, including a basin of water to cross, slalom, ramps, hurdles and other obstacles. This “little sister” of the Course de Cinq 4000, it will be called the Course des Cinq Obstacles. This event has the advantage of enabling all children, including the majority accompanying their parents who are picking up race bibs, to also participate in Sierre-Zinal, in their own way.

For children over 8 years of age, they can race along the path from Chandolin to Zinal in the Junior category on Sunday, August 14, 2016. Our official sponsor, UBS, is a partner in this project. The Sierre sports shop, AZ Sport, will also play an equally important role in achieving this new project this year.

Run the Alps:
Since you have replaced Jean-Claude Pont as the director of the Sierre-Zinal race, what has been the biggest surprise for you?

Vincent: The biggest surprise was discovering all the emotions that participants feel throughout the course. To be able to welcome them arriving to the finish line is something unique and wonderful. There are thousands on this course that day, but all live the adventure alone.

Run the Alps: What advice can you share with the runners who have signed up for the 2016 Sierre-Zinal race?

Vincent: I advise participants registered in the Tourist category that the system of starting blocks improves the flow of the first kilometers of the race. They have the option between two paths which will also improve the fluidity: St-Antoine or Niouc. I encourage the Tourists to think about going through Niouc.

I find that participants have the equipment and are suitably trained for Sierre-Zinal, so I don’t have any recommendations for those at this level in particular.

I encourage them to have fun; they can be generous in the effort, while having a good time.

For Sierre-Zinal, our motto is the heart before the clock …. as Jean-Claude has said before!

Run the Alps: Finally, do you have any other news to share about the 2016 race?

Vincent: Sierre-Zinal has 510 volunteers. We are a large family that wants to welcome each participant with great enthusiasm. We seek to enlarge the family and recruit volunteers for the post-race massage table and meal areas. Thanks to the people who wish to live this adventure with a view from inside the event – you can register to be a volunteer at info@sierre-zinal.com.
